Dentistry for healthy sleep
Restful sleep is the foundation for whole-body health. But a good night’s sleep relies on breathing easily throughout the night.
Our office helps adults and children who are suffering from airway issues like sleep apnea and sleep-disordered breathing. We provide modern treatments to ensure you and your family are not only getting the restful sleep you need but are sleeping safely and living life comfortably.
Airway issues our dentists treat
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a medical condition where a person stops breathing dozens (or even hundreds) of times every night due to an airway blockage. This is a dangerous condition with negative consequences for both your quality of life and your health, including high blood pressure, heart attack, and brain injury.
Common symptoms of sleep apnea:
- Waking at night to use the bathroom
- Restless sleep
- Daytime sleepiness
- Difficulty concentrating
- Severe morning headaches
- Unexplained and sudden changes in mood
Pediatric Sleep Disordered Breathing
Pediatric sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is a general term for kids who have breathing difficulties during sleep. SDB ranges from mild snoring to obstructive sleep apnea. SDB is also often a root cause of many other issues — from bedwetting and nightmares to chronic allergies, problems focusing, and depression.
Common symptoms of pediatric sleep disordered breathing:
- Mouth breathing/Snoring
- Tooth grinding
- Swollen adenoids/tonsils
- ADD/ADHD
- Academic challenges
- Delayed/stunted growth
- Restless sleep
- Morning headaches
- Crowded teeth
Sleep dentistry treatments at Brimfield Family Dentistry
Our dentists are your partners in the early diagnosis of sleep disorders, including OSA and SDB. Since sleep issues often present symptoms in the teeth, jaw, and mouth, we can help detect airway issues before or as they are starting.
Our office provides modern, comfortable sleep apnea and sleep disordered breathing treatments.
Oral Appliance
Our sleep apnea appliances are small, comfortable, and custom-made to fit your mouth.
We recommend an appliance for adults with mild to moderate symptoms or for those who cannot tolerate a CPAP machine. Worn like a retainer or mouth guard, this appliance keeps your airway open and clear all night long.
HeathyStart System for Kids
We offer the HealthyStart System as a modern, non-invasive, pain-free approach to opening your child’s airway while they sleep. This comfortable, removable device is similar to a retainer and helps bring the upper and lower jaws forward, widen the airway, and encourage nasal breathing. This system can even help correct crowded, misaligned teeth!
Airway Management Solutions
Experience relief from snoring, sleep apnea, and other airway obstructions with our comprehensive airway management solutions. By addressing factors like nasal congestion, tongue position, and jaw alignment, we aim to ensure efficient airflow and reduce the risk of sleep-related disorders. Our treatment options include personalized oral appliances, nasal breathing techniques, and lifestyle modifications to help you breathe easier and enjoy a restful sleep.
Hear from our patients
The atmosphere in the office is warm and welcoming. The doctor and staff genuinely care about you as an individual as well as the health of your teeth and gums.

Answers to your questions
Does dental insurance cover sleep appliances?
Adult sleep appliances are covered under your medical insurance, not dental insurance. However, the HealthyStart system to treat pediatric SDB is billed to your dental insurance. Call us or your health insurance provider to learn more.
Do I have sleep apnea if I snore?
Snoring is often a sign of sleep apnea, but not everyone who snores has sleep apnea. If you snore, make sure to tell us during your routine exam so we can evaluate your risk.
Can you fix sleep apnea naturally?
There are many lifestyle factors that put you at higher risk for sleep apnea. By eliminating these risks, you may be able to help naturally fix your sleep apnea:
- Stop smoking
- Stop drinking alcohol
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Alter your sleep position
Will my child grow out of their sleep-disordered breathing condition?
If not treated, the width of your child’s airway will often worsen over time, making it increasingly challenging to breathe at night and live their day-to-day lives comfortably. We recommend the HealthyStart® System to open up the airway, improve airway width, and encourage nasal breathing. It also helps ensure that your child is able to live a happy, healthy life.
